Environmentally Friendly Packaging Shipping Material

If you’re trying to become more environmentally friendly, packaging is one of the areas you can target.

With the rise of online shopping, there has been a lot more waste being generated. This is why we put together a list of potential packaging materials you could use!

1. Cellulose packaging
Cellulose packaging is biodegradable and compostable. It is made from cotton, hemp and other natural sources. Other benefits are that it’s moisture-resistant, and heat sealable with the right tools. These are great for storing foods like nuts or candy.

2. Corrugated packaging
Corrugated packaging is recyclable and can be reused multiple times. They are also very light in weight, yet do a good job protecting items. Corrugated boxes can store almost everything as long as you include filler material for fragile items.

3. Kraft paper
‘Virgin’ pulp or natural wood fiber is used to make kraft paper. The pulp can be bleached to create white paper. In its natural form, it’s a dark brown.

Kraft paper is recyclable and durable. For kraft paper to be degradable or compostable, it should not be coated with anything.

4. Green cell foam
This is a great option to protect fragile items. Green cell foam is compostable, biodegradable, and water soluble. The material is U.S grown and made from non-GMO cornstarch. It looks and feels similar to packaging peanuts.

5. Mushroom packaging
With its closest relative being styrofoam, mushroom packaging is made from mycelium, a network of fungal threads also known as hyphae.

Mushroom packaging naturally decomposes, which reduces waste. It can be molded into many different shapes.

6. Cornstarch packaging
Cornstarch packaging is biodegradable and can replace styrofoam. Ideally, it’s for items with limited use. This packaging is great for takeaway food, but can be used for other things.

Hopefully these ideas are helpful and you’re able to implement one of these ideas into your business.
